An item deleted from the second-stage recycle bin is purged immediately.<\/li><li><strong>Deleted sites.<\/strong> A deleted site collection is kept for 93 days, then erased with all its content.<\/li><li><strong>Microsoft&#8217;s internal backups.<\/strong> Microsoft keeps 14 days of backups after permanent deletion. Only support can start a restore, of an entire site collection or subsite, to a given point in time. After these 14 days, the data can no longer be recovered.<\/li><li><strong>Version history<\/strong> of a file, within limits on number and space.<\/li><li><strong>Restore your OneDrive.<\/strong> Users can undo all actions from the last 30 days on their files, for example after an infection. A file permanently deleted from the OneDrive recycle bin, however, can no longer be recovered.<\/li><\/ul><p>These mechanisms catch a file overwritten this week. Those that only sync a shortcut to SharePoint are redundant: decide on these so that you do not pay twice for the same file, while leaving no gap.<\/li><li>Useful metadata if the tool captures it (dates, authors). A copy of bare files without permissions is already very useful. A copy that also restores permissions is even more so. Ask which of the two the tool provides.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-635d2f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"635d2f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Method<\/h2><p>Same logic as for Exchange: a dedicated application, minimum permissions, at least daily frequency, 30 to 90 days&#8217; retention unless there is a reason otherwise, storage outside the tenant, a test restore of a folder to a test site. The first pass takes a long time (the entire file history). Subsequent passes only cover changes. CERT-MU recommends testing restores regularly, and the French cybersecurity agency (ANSSI) requires them to follow a written procedure: a backup is only as good as its restore.<\/p><p>The volume is often <strong>greater<\/strong> than that of email. It is the volume that determines storage size, not the number of messages.<\/p><p>Microsoft also sells Microsoft 365 Backup, which covers OneDrive and SharePoint (and Exchange Online), with restore points every 10 minutes over the last two weeks, then weekly up to 52 weeks. The copies remain within the Microsoft 365 boundary. See <a href=\"\/en\/guides\/cloud-email\/does-microsoft-365-include-backup\/\">Does Microsoft 365 really include a backup?<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed171e5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ed171e5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Limitations to know before buying<\/h2><ul><li>Some backups restore files but not site customisations, Power Automate flows or third-party applications built on SharePoint.<\/li><li>Anonymous sharing and \u201canyone with the link\u201d links are not a backup strategy. They are potential leaks.<\/li><li>Workstation \u2194 OneDrive sync spreads local encryption to the cloud. Version history and the 30-day restore help for a while. The dated external copy is the next safety net.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09638ce elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09638ce\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wdb-g-brand\"><h2>At WeDoBack<\/h2><p>WeDoBack backs up SharePoint and OneDrive, in addition to Microsoft 365 email, calendars and contacts. Copies are encrypted before they are sent, with a key held by the customer, and stored outside the tenant, on servers dedicated to backup. Storage is subscribed under <a href=\"\/en\/smart-offer\/\">SMART<\/a> or <a href=\"\/en\/integral-offer\/\">INTEGRAL<\/a>, depending on the volume kept. Even so, have the sites and accounts concerned written into the quote: this is the list you will check during the restore test. Microsoft lets you restore a OneDrive to a state from the last 30 days, which helps if the attack is detected quickly. A dated external copy, older than the attack, remains the next safety net.<\/p><\/details><details><summary>Can Microsoft restore a site deleted two months ago?<\/summary><p>Yes, if it is still within the 93-day retention period for deleted sites.
